Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries store a large amount of energy in a small space. Damage, a short circuit, or incompatible charging equipment can create fire and burn risks. Start with the manufacturer’s instructions and use the checklist below as a practical refresher.

KNOW WHEN TO STOP

If a battery swells, hisses, leaks, smokes, smells unusual, or becomes too hot to touch, stop using and charging it. Keep people away. If there is smoke, fire, or an immediate danger, move to safety and call 911. Do not handle a hot or actively failing battery.

Use the right equipment

  • Read the device and battery instructions before use.
  • Use only the charger and replacement battery specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not mix batteries of different brands, ages, capacities, or charge levels in a multi-battery device.

Stay present while charging

  • Charge where you can see the device, on a stable surface away from combustible materials.
  • Do not charge while sleeping or leave a charging device unattended.
  • Unplug the charger when charging is complete or if the device becomes unusually warm.

Inspect before every use

  • Stop using a battery or device that is swollen, dented, leaking, wet, punctured, or unusually hot.
  • Do not remove protective wraps, bypass safeguards, or attempt a battery-pack repair.
  • Ask the manufacturer for handling and replacement instructions for a damaged battery.

Prevent short circuits

  • Keep removable batteries in an individual non-conductive case during transport.
  • Never carry an uncovered battery with keys, coins, or other metal objects.
  • Do not use individual cells removed from a battery pack or cells not designed for consumer use.

Control heat and moisture

  • Store batteries at room temperature in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not leave a battery-powered device in a hot vehicle or expose it to extended extreme temperatures.
  • Keep devices, batteries, chargers, and small parts secured away from children and pets.

Recycle separately

  • Do not place lithium-ion batteries or devices containing them in household trash or curbside recycling.
  • Take them to a battery recycler, electronics recycler, or household hazardous-waste collection site.
  • Follow the recycler’s instructions. For an undamaged removable battery, isolate exposed terminals with non-conductive tape or place it in its own plastic bag.
